Comments:
Thanks to Joe, NK7U, for the use of his station for this one. KL9A couldn't
make it, so I had the opportunity to do this as a single op. Joe spent the
entire week leading up to the contest on the towers adding additional antennas.
All the extra effort to get things ready was greatly appreciated.
I knew that conditions were going to be affected by the CME, but what wasnt
known was the exact timing of the impact. Before the contest started, I took a
quick scan of 15m, and heard lots of Europeans. This is highly unusual so early
(4am) so I knew I would have to start on 15m with the 2nd radio to work as many
mults as I could. The first sign of impact was around 1930z when the EU
stations began to sound warbly on 15m, and soon after they disappeared
completely. I was surprised to have a decent JA opening after their sunrise,
but that opening was cut short and completely closed by 2330z. I kept checking
15m all night just in case it would recover, but it never did.
I never got a EU run going on 20m as by the time the band should have opened
all polar paths were affected by the CME. This really affected the mult total
on 20, as many HQ mults were left on the table.
This became a domestic contest for me after 2330z. I could hear the stations
down in W6 working JA's and pacific on 20m late into the night, but being so
far north that path was non existent. The last 3 hours were especially hard as
all stations on all bands had a warbly sound and were almost impossible to copy.
I finally had a short JA run on 40m the last 10 minutes of the contest.
I had to shut down for a little over an hour starting at 22z due to a large
cell that past overhead with lots of lightning strikes nearby. We tried to
wait it out as long as possible, but eventually had to unplug everything to be
on the safe side. Joe had a lightning strike last year, and we didn't want to
go through that ordeal again.
Despite the dismal 2nd half, this was still an enjoyable contest. I love the
summertime propagation.

Dan N6MJ
