Comments:
First of all, many thanks to Bob, W8ERD, and his lovely wife, Judy, for
providing me with the opportunity to operate this event from his station. Bob
recently underwent an extensive antenna project and he needed someone to test
his new system. I promised to behave, Judy agreed, and I enjoyed an extremely
pleasant contest experience.
I was debating about running high power but decided against it. Learning to
use the amp would be one more thing to forget about in the heat of the battle.
As it was, the unfamaliar radio and antenna system was enough of a challenge.
It would also give me a decent comparison to my home station's wire antenna
sysem which is low power also.
It seems that there are more HQ stations in this event every year. That's a
good thing and it keeps things exciting with the additional mults. You have to
balance the one pointers against the new multiplier. With none of the signle
ops on the cluster, it makes everyone spend some time S & P'ing if they want to
increase their score.
I worked a bunch of new stuff which was really exciting for me. The watery
signals for the three hours or so Sunday morning was a mean trick by the
propagation gods; but, then, everyone had to put up with it. I did manage to
find TM0HQ, NU1AW/9, and W0UA on all six bands. Thanks guys. Although I
didn't specifically look for the WRTC2014 Test Stations during the contest, I
did manage to work them all. I had four Q's with W1MJ and WB1Z, three Q's with
K1GQ, K1ZD, N2KW, N9NB, NI1L, W1MA, W1SJ, and W1UJ, and two Q's with K1RQ, W1HH,
and W1UE.
The station consisted of a Yaesu FT-2000D (kept at 150 watts) and the software
behind the scenes was N1MM. The antenna farm consisted of individual inverted
tower ground planes for 80 and 160 meters, 4 element Yagi at 80', and a 4
element SteppIR for 20, 15 and 10 at 70'.
It's always nice to say HI to old friends. Thanks to all who found their way
into my log. I'll be looking for you next year be it with my wires or a bunch
of aluminum.
