First of all, THANK YOU to the stations in the Far East and Oceania. In addition
to 1278 JA's, I worked 47 BY, 31 DU, 35 YB, and 60 VK's. This would have been a
terrible contest without the great activity from that part of the world.
I don't understand Friday night on 40 at all. The few EU I could hear were
relatively easy to work, yet I had Caribbean guys not hearing me. Took out the
flashlight to make sure the beam was pointed right. Check. Reconfigured the
antenna switch to be 100% sure I wasn't trying to work anyone on the NW wire
beam. Check. Eventually worked them all. 40 was excellent to the far east both
nights.
80 and 160 were noisy on Friday, but being 1200+ miles from the source of the
QRN made them almost bearable, compared to 2 weeks earlier when the storms were
300 miles away. Worked only 13 EU on 80 all weekend, but CR6K, ED1R, CR3L and
EF8R were easy on 160. CW5W was S9+20 on 160 at his sunrise.
Almost gave up on Saturday morning when 15 didn't seem to open at sunrise, but
it was just a little late, but the rate was nothing to brag about. Couldn't buy
a decent run frequency. 2 hours later (16Z) it was done. 20 never really opened
to EU all weekend. It sounded real good around 11Z Saturday (3 hours before
local sunrise), if all you wanted to work was EA7 and CT.
Saturday night was quiet, but nothing doing to EU on any of the low bands.
Tried to run JA on 80. The band seemed to be open, but with just an
inverted-vee in that direction, I didn't have the horsepower.
15 was even worse on Sunday. Didn't open until after 15Z (SR + 1.5 hours).
While waiting for 15, I found 14328 to be perfectly quiet, and I had a 100 QSO
hour of weak big guns who needed NM on 20. Not one of them was stronger than
S6. The long path ZL who called during that run was cool - a mult.
When 15 finally did open, it actually opened and closed several times. I would
have a nice pileup for 15 minutes, then 30 minutes of no EU QSO's. At one point
late in the opening, I heard a weak, fluttery station calling. I moved the beam
from the usual 35 degree heading to 20 degrees. It was like someone flipped a
switch, with strong, fluttery G, DL, PA, etc. I have never seen directivity
like this before.
Really late on 15 (after 19Z) I had RW0BG and UA9MA call. Both pretty loud with
no flutter. Eh ? Isn't it like 0100 AM local time for them ?
On Sunday AM, I always make a list of easy mults I need on 10, 15 and 20. Guys
that I have already worked on 3 or more bands, that I just need to find. That
list was the shortest ever, thanks to all the enforced S&P I did on Saturday.
Didn't work a single new mult in the last hour.
