Ever since the uptick in activity in Western Europe with the newer HF
licensees, DX SSB contests have been a lot of fun here. With conditions
that favored southern locales at times this weekend, there were some
exhilarating stretches.
Having made over 2000 QSOs on 10M as an all-band entrant back in October for CQ
WW SSB, it was a huge disappointment to only squeeze out 274 QSOs on 10M this
weekend, with the EU QSOs being almost all very weak.
QRN the first night was S9+10 on 75 and S9+15 on 160, so I took the night off
for the low bands entirely. First 40M QSO was in the 25th hour.
Had planned a 24-hour casual effort and was right on pace for that with over 11
hours off the first day when a DX friend reminded me that FL was having a good
weekend propagationally as compared to the rest of the USA. I decided shortly
afterward to op more than 12 hours the 2nd day.
Just as on CW, we had another really good EU opening long before dawn the first
night, but that opening wasn't as solid the second night, even before the solar
flare hit. (We are all very fortunate since a bigger solar flare occurred 4
hours after the contest ended!).
On the first morning, enough VKs were calling on 20 (and fewer Europeans than
normal) that I swung the upper beam out west for a while.
There seemed like an endless supply of UA9/0 on CW 2 weeks ago, but this time,
the polar path wasn't allowing that to happen.
Had the usual difficulty working close-in mults on 10M that are easy for those
further away.
Never dreamed I'd work as many CM/CO stations as OHs. That is a statement of
both the increasing activity in Cuba (a great thing) and the awful propagation
that those in northern latitudes had to endure.
Thanks to everyone for the QSOs (and special thanks to the 519 that made it
into the log on multiple bands) !
I look forward to some fun runs in WPX SSB, but not likely as a serious
entrant.
