Comments:
A full SOAB HP effort was not to be this weekend, so I did SOSB 10 â" and
enjoyed it a lot!
Something new.
Itâs a long story, with a combination of factors leading to the single-band
effort: two stress-filled months of work, a visiting relative I hadnât seen
in years, my turn to make Thanksgiving dinner, being the least prepared Iâve
ever been for CW WW CW, and a nasty solar flare. After 90 minutes of futility
on 40, 80 and 160 Friday night, and feeling like it would be really nice to go
to bed early, I decided to hang it up and start a single-band 10 in the
morning.
I once did a single-band effort on 20 (I think it was ARRL DX), and absolutely
hated the grind. Not this time! 10 meters is the ideal band for SOSB: sunrise
to sunset is less than 12 hours, plenty of time to spend with family, plenty of
time to sleep, high rates (on Sunday, at least) and tons of interesting mults.
The only problems were terrible conditions on Saturday and no over-the-pole
propagation either day. No zone 17, 18 or 19, and a general dearth of Russians
and other Easter Europeans. Worked two or three JAs, just barely, and Iâm
sure they were big stations running high power. Virtually no other Asians.
Oceania was pretty good, and even managed zone 29. But the band didnât stay
open long enough to grab much JA and Asia.
Ended the first day with only 328 Qs (sans dupes.) Second day was much better:
624, with most of that being in a continuous five-hour stretch of running.
All in all, though, it was a real pleasure to spend a stress-free, mellow and
easy weekend on 10, the most friendly band â" when itâs open. I have no idea
how I did, but it probably wasnât a very competitive effort. No matter, it was
heck of a lot of fun.
And I canât end without saying⦠Thereâs no meters like 10 meters!
Hope to back to SOAB HP in ARRL DX CW.
[Log submitted 30 minutes after the contest â" probably a record for me. Would
have been faster, but had to manually edit the claimed score and the first try
got bounced for a 599 that had turned into a 9.]
