Comments:
I've said it before, but I think there is nothing that equals CQWW CW in our
sport. It enables maximal utilization of the operator's complete skill set and
pushes one to the limits, even beyond. Moreover, the sheer volume of stations
and activity is amazing. The fun is increased further by the mystery of
fluttery and scattery signals that add unexpected multipliers on marginal
bands.
I arrived in CU2 already one week before the contest. In addition to a welcome
mini-vacation from work, it gave me good time to get familiar with the station
and environment. OH2BH spent two full days with me for orientation. Apart from
SAC SSB from LX7I in October, this was my first serious contest from outside
OH/OH0, so there was a lot to learn especially about propagation. Using logs
from previous years, VOACAP (http://www.voacap.com), tips from OH2UA, and some
pre-contest operating I managed to get a decent understanding of what to
expect.
Despite the adrenaline flow, I managed to catch a couple of hours of sleep on
Friday evening before the contest started at 2300 local time. That kept me
going quite well for 24 hours or so, but with the lower rates by Sunday morning
I was already forgetting to finish QSOs. I then slept for 30 minutes, which was
enough to last the rest of the contest. At times the pileups were rather
enormous, taking my CW speed to 40+ WPM in response. A lot of zero-beating; the
useful trick of going to the sides shortened the calling time for many stations
considerably.
Similar to CQWW SSB, the Arcala stations CR2X, OH8X and OH0X used the live
scoreboard and audio + video streams. This is a trial exercise in openness and
transparency that I think is very good for radiosporting. As commented by many
others, the scoreboard also adds a new dimension of in-contest excitement. In
addition to my own situation it was cool to follow the developments in the
Scandinavian home-field SOABHP battle between ES5TV, OH8X, OH0X, OH0Z, and
SJ2W. Special congrats to Micke SM2WMV for the effort.
I can't say anything comparative about propagation because of no prior
experience from CU2. However, it seemed that Sunday was a bit better than
Saturday. A lot of echo in many 10m/15m signals on Sunday. The main effects of
the CMEs were reserved for my Nordic compatriots as usual.
Thanks to the entire Radio Arcala team for this opportunity and for the hard
work that goes into keeping things going. Particular thanks to OH2UA for all
tips & advice, OH1WZ for advice, OH2BH for introducing me to the station, OH8NC
for the in-contest cheering, and CU2CE for an enjoyable tourist roundtrip of
São Miguel island! But I think most of all, thanks to my dad OH6GE for
teaching me the Code all those years ago :)
