Comments:
I think I missed my opportunity for a personal best in this contest. My second
tower is still down along with all my low 10 meter antennas after a tornado.
My Icom 756PROIII rig died after a lightning strike and, lucky for me, Houston
Amateur Radio Supply is an authorized repair facility and they jumped through
hoops getting one of the last mother boards here and installed before the
contest. I picked it up and was still installing and setting the parameters at
the beginning of the contest. The Tentec amp died too, so I set up the Alpha
99 which is finicky to tune on 10 meters. I kept the output at about one KW so
it would not fault. I probably just don't know how to tune it. It is not like
any other amp I have ever tuned. Then after I got a few Q's in the log I saw
it was not scoring right. Some numbskull had set up CQWW WPX instead of DX
contest. Had to stop, write down the calls and times and start a new log and
put them in!
The only rotary antenna was at 140 feet, which was nice for Asia and Europe,
but relegated me to hunting and pouncing to South America because it was too
high.
Conditions were not as good as last year. Missed zones 18, 22, 23 and 29.
Probably would have gotten 29 if I had the second antenna for VK-ZL. I had to
keep the rotary antenna on JA for the rate. 10 BY's, 308 JA's!
Last EU on first day at 2029 and on second day at 2056. Both were just before
propagation opened to JA. You know the conditions are REALLY good when it is
open to EU and JA at the same tome. That did not happen for me, but it was
close.
Kudos to Bill, W4ZV and Jerry, WB9Z, good job! Look at the K3LR 10m line score,
that's what we could have done, if we really worked at it! Amazing number of
Q's, good work!
