Comments:
What a weird contest it was. Propagation was quite good, but I felt that I just
could not get any decent run going and rates remained lower than expected. Also
bands were really noisy most of the time and with some static rain.
The start of the contest was kind of a disaster to me. 20M was wide open to US,
but rates were super low. I knew that I should have been running 300 Q/h rates,
but rate meter just stayed at 100 Q/h. But those stations that came back to my
CQ were really loud. I tried everything I could from changing my running
frequency to monitoring my TX with second radio. After 30 minutes I had 48
QSOâs. Last year it took me 8 minutes for the same. Knowing that 20M should
provide 300Q/h rates made decision of leaving the band really hard. Same
remained on those typically very high rates Saturday and Sunday evening hours.
Only reason I can figure is that there must have been free adult TV on US for
the weekend...
Last year it took me 3:48 for the first 1000 Qâs. Now for the same I had to
spend 6:12. So from the very beginning it was clear that this wasn't going be
record breaking year. Also some minor problems with station this time: couldn't
use the DVK on 160 and 80 for 1st night because of RFI that effected on SO2R
operating quite much, lost K9AY and all but one of 160M GP radials Saturday
during day time for the rest of the contest because of farmers messing around
in field, burned couple of triplexers and so on. But even without any of those
problems, no more than 14,5M would have been possible.
On the positive side, I was great fun to meet all of you friends on the bands!
Thatâs really what makes CQWW such a great event! Also staying in chair for
48 hours has never been so easy. Of course "easy" is quite subjective term when
talking about operating for full 48 hours. Only once on Sunday morning I needed
to run out, take off the shirt and pour some water to my head. Log shows total
"break time" of 59 minutes, whereâs 30+ minutes were used for chancing SO2R
device, solving RFI issue and chancing burned triplexer. Rest was used for some
quick visits to see if thingâs were still working down there ;)
Well, my dream of breaking 10k QSO's in CQWW still exists. I have to admit, but
maybe I'll never reach this one â" sun spots are going and you guys are getting
too old ;)
Thank you for QSO's and QSY's! Each and every contact is a lot appreciated! See
ya in CQWW CW. For CW part well swap stations with Kim (OH6KZP) while Kim will
be at CR2X and Iâll operate from OH0X.
