Comments:
Another ARRL DX Contest at KB1H. We toyed with the idea of M/S or M/2. When all
was done we decided to stay M/2 as we have many years in the past.
When W1UJ said he was committed to coming and also K1EBY it was an easy
decision.
The crew this year was KB1H, W1UJ, NB1U, NR1X and K1EBY. N1WK providing support
with wood for the woodstove and food on Sunday.
This was by far not our best contest preparing nor equipment ready. Due to the
recent storms and cold weather both the 15M and 20M beams were not indicating
correctly. The 40M beam had no indicating at all! Due to slippage in the mast
clamp we never knew where the beams were unless it was daylight.
Equipment failure also bit us in the arse. A Titan Power Supply, an YCCC SO2R
box, and the Kenwood TL-922 pushed into service had a temperature
trip but it did clear itself after a rest. Also a recently repaired Dunestar
BPF might have a 10M section failure. The SO2R problem really hurt our
first night 40M score.
Looking at the Real Score Data it has become apparent that if you want to do
well in M/2 you need two radios, two operators per band. Transmit
lockout and seperate antennas. I don't know if we will ever have that
capability. We do a decent job of staying with other sin QSOs but hurt
badly in Mults.
In the end, we better last year's score by more than 1M points. I am not sure
the opinions on propagation but it did not seem to be allot better
than last year.
A usual, no contest happens here without a snow storm. Though not big, Mother
Nature did not disappoint. After plowing the driveway, it was
only proper for me to brush off everyone's car. Another chore of being a
station owner and host.
All in all, it was fun! To surpass last year's score, lots of food, and great
company always wins out over being #1.
SSB in two weeks and I think no one here is looking forward to that mode here.
One thing for sure with a CW contest you can eat
too much.
Thanks to the operators here, my XYL Mary for providing Sunday breakfast, some
of the other XYLs for cooking up a slew of crock pot
meals and everyone for the QSOs.
