10-METER 1991 EU RECORD (CW) SHATTERED AT CR1Z WITH A FLUX OF 100

The ARRL DX Contest is one of our team's favorites and over the past five years
we have run it in Azores with a small crew, both single bands and small multies,
as our station is designed for single operator efforts only. We have gone mono
bands up to 15M but never 10M, waiting for a reasonable maximum.

As far as we can determine, the real max never came the way we had hoped for,
and by now we may already be sliding down the curve. No one seems to know
exactly.

So, our tag team of Toni, OH2UA; Juha, OH8NC; Pertti, OH2PM and Martti, OH2BH
decided that, now if ever, we should have a run for our money. With this in
mind, we decided to run SOAB at our primary QTH and establish another QTH for
10M (daytime) and 40M (nighttime). Well ahead of time, a 4-L Optibeam for 10M
was hoisted and additional equipment was sent to the site.

With the Flux dropping below 100, we thought we had missed the boat. We were
late in the game but still determined to push even harder. 10M was quiet and
prime time hours did not produce much. However, with the approach of darkness
signals started to pick up and one station followed another. At the end of the
first day, the tally reached 1200. With a little math it looked like a record
was doable. But Sunday produced a lot of traffic on 10M between continental EU
and the US, pushing us to the sidelines, but again at dusk the band faded out
only to come back for a few valuable hours. At the final bell, that Old Black
Magic had happened again - 1859 QSOs were in the books with 59 mults.

As we never attracted huge pileups, the F1 machine was almost worn out and the
final tally of 1859 was garnered one Q at time. With that score, the 10M EU
record from 1991 was put to rest. Repeating the same formula, the SOAB record
was surpassed by a fair margin, with the CR2X mothership taking what belongs to
it in a European setting.

Thanks to my travel companions Toni, OH2UA (CR2X) and Pertti, OH2PM (CQ8X) and
the entire Azores-Finland Friendship Consortium for helping us along the way to
add a few more wins under our belt.

Martti, OH2BH (CR1Z), Radio Arcala Azores
CR1Z, CR2X and CQ8X QSLs via OH2BH
