NAQPs are probably my favorite contests (after California QSO Party of course). 
Nice and short so you don't need days to recover.  Almost everyone runs 100
watts so there's no monster signals to deal with.  Lots of activity but still
room to squeeze in and do some running.

Bands seemed OK but not great.  It seemed like things were better in the lower
part of the solar cycle.  I checked 10M frequently but never saw a single
signal.  Of course my dipole isn't very potent on 20/15/10 and these summer
contests have a lot of daylight time, especially here on the West coast (my QTH
is in sight of the Pacific Ocean so you can't get much further west unless your
in AK or HI).  Winter NAQPs are better for me.
