Comments:
We decided to form a team of YL's to participate in the Russian DX with PI4YLC
for the first time. PI4YLC is a club call used by YLâs in the Netherlands.
The team members were PA2LS-Lisa, Claudia (waiting for her novice call sign,
she just passed her exam), PA1ENG-Mariette and myself. Now we had to think of
a location/station. We asked our friend Aurelio-PC5A if we could make use of
the station at PI4TUE and he was gladly prepared to be our contest facilitator!
Esrac (Eindhoven Student Radio Amateur Club) is situated in the middle of
Eindhoven (with approx. 220.000 inhabitants) and is part of the faculty
Electrical Engineering of the Technical University Eindhoven. The radio shack
is at the top floor of the building (13 storeyâs high), which gives a really
nice view of the city and it is also a great height for antennas. We have been
participating in contests before (once with two YLâs in the SP DX in 2012),
but mostly in mixed teams (PACC, ARRL DX) which is always a lot of fun. We
operate in the Multi single class, so there is plenty of time for social talk
with other team members or visitors whenever you are not operating (personally
my favorite type of contesting). We arrived at TU/E between 10.00 and 11.00
local time so we could familiarize ourselves with all the equipment and contest
software. Here is a list of the equipment and antennas we used:
TenTec Orion transceiver with Heil Headset, homebrew footswitch, ACOM
amplifier, Bencher paddle, SteppIR 3 ele beam, 80M loop, 40M vertical, 40M
dipole, 160M sloping dipole
After Aurelio explained how to use the hardware and software we were set to go
and starting calling at 12.00utc! Three minutes later we logged our first QSO
on 14mhz. We operated the full 24 hrs by taking turns, sometimes with a co
operator, sometimes alone and operated in Phone and CW. Off course, the voice
in phone is the charm of a female operator! During the contest Aurelio-PC5A and
Rens-PA3FGA were there for technical and moral support. Our own barista Rens
provided us with great coffee and we all brought lots of yummy food to share to
get us through the 24hrs of the contest. We managed to get 1173 qsoâs in the
log. We ran a bit behind on the multipliers (compared to other stations on
cqcontest.ru) but ended up with almost 3 million points! Our target is set for
next yearâs Russian DX!
Big thanks to the team and support team for a really nice contest experience in
the Russian DX!
73 es good dx,
Chantal-PA5YL
