Comments:
Conditions seemed pretty good over the weekend, which added to the enjoyment.
Pleased to see low winds, which meant, unlike in the SSB section, the towers
could be fully up. Activity was at its usual frenetic level for the whole
weekend, but some appalling operating when calling mults on LF, which made it
quite an issue to hear the DX replying. Compared to that, HF was a walk in the
park. I got the impression that 160 was suffering from high absorption
"
the Caribbean stations were not their usual strength, and the US was fairly
scant. Pleased to get Z3 on 160 " I thought for a while it was going
to
be hard.
We had a bit of an issue with one of the cluster links, which meant that,
unknown to us for a number of hours, we were not getting skimmer spots. This is
rather important " if you know you’re not getting them, then you
manually hunt, but with the number of skimmers around Europe, it is pretty much
OK to rely on the spots for highlighting mults. I don’t know yet what
happened, but the telnet access on one of the computers quietly shut down
(despite auto-reconnect being enabled) and we didn’t notice ! So I suspect
that we have suffered on the mult total as a result of this goof.
A quick check of the antennas the day before the contest showed that local deer
seemed to have been using the beverages as dental floss. Not a good idea, and I
had to replace one complete length as it was badly frayed.
I remain impressed with the FT5K performance in major contests "
pretty
stress-free receiver performance, despite the rather quaint MMI on the second
receiver.
Thanks to everyone for the fun.
