Comments:
Drove down to Kure Beach, N.C. starting just after Saturday sunrise for a nice
week at the beach (woke up Sunday to a near miss lightning bolt - it's RAINING
HARD!!). Installed my new, never tested helical 20m whip and jammed the new
$10.00 CW keying interface into the radio (also not tested with this radio) and
noticed instant RF feedback would shut the radio down after about 20 watts, and
it would shut down intermittently even below 20 watts. For those of you that
worked me and wondered about that delay....that was the radio rebooting!!
Got serious about 10 QSOs into this event and tightened the power connection to
the battery, took the antenna apart and tightened where the whip meets the
helical loading coil, and this time tightened it securely in the mag mount
base....double checked the ground to the car body...and like magic I could now
run high power (i.e. almost 100 watts) without issue.
The new $10.00 USB to CW interface worked flawlessly after I hunted down that
menu setting to change my CW from a "paddle" to a keyed interface.
My location was within view of salt water almost completely surrounding me at
one of my favorite Windsurfing spots called "The Basin" right at Ft.
Fisher at the end of Kure Beach...it also happens to be a stellar radio
QTH....and a very popular place for sand fleas at night.
30 minutes of radio fun....boy did I see a LOT of PVRCers skimmed while I was
operating....AND....many of NCCC members too.
This NCCC inspired NAQP challenge has certainly added to the fun and activity
in this event!
73,
Jim WX3B
