After taking last year off, I went all in this year. A main issue is the fact
that I don't live where my station is located, so it is hard to do the
necessary upkeep to keep Murphy away.
This year, I left nothing to chance, as I prepped a month ahead of time to
ensure that all the connections were connected, redundancies put in place, and
things were in order.
That said, 40 meters has been an issue, so this year, I kept it simple. An
inverted vee was installed at 48 feet to take advantage of both low and high
angle paths, and a second 40 antenna was put online just in case. It worked out
well, as it was the best I have done on 40 in forever and a day.
What also stood out to me was the short skip on 20, and 15 to some extent. I
found myself with the antenna pointed west and I was hearing 4-landers and east
coasters at 20 over 9! I'll take 271 Q's on 20 anytime from Ohio.
As for the trailer park, aka 75 meters, it was business as usual. Asking
several times if a frequency is in use and after several minutes, Jethro shows
up with an attitude. Thank goodness for the expanded phone privileges,
otherwise it would have been worse. On top of the fact that the absorption was
up there, it got challenging at times.
Equipment included an FT950, an AL80B, keyed with a W9XT voice keyer, fed toa
Force 12 C3S at 70 feet, and wires for 40 and 75.
