Comments:

Over the last few years that I have been thinking I would like to operate
the SS from some places that are not in Texas. I know this will sound strange
but I think it would even be fun to go do the contest from some station that
just has some dipoles. Something different. Maybe that will be next year.

This year marks the 36th time I have done this contest.

32 of them have been high power.

I still find the SS to be fun and interesting but it might be more
interesting to do something different. I have even been considering going QRP.

Anyway - I had talked to N9RV about it last year and for various
reasons it just did not workout. He sent me a message on the Thursday
a week before the contest asking if I still wanted to do it - so I
checked airfare and found that the prices were OK and there were still
seats so I bought a ticket. I flew to Missoula on Friday morning and got
there about 2pm. Pat picked me up at the airport and took me out
to his station. Pat lives about 30 minutes from Missoula. Pat gave me
a tour of the station and we took care of a few tasks like unlocking
the 20/40 meter tower so it would rotate and tweaking the tuning of
one of the antennas. Pat has three towers on his 5 acres with a 4
square for 80 meters. Inside he has an IC-7800/commander amp and a
IC-781/Alpha 87a. A very nice setup

I took some photos can you can see here:

The contest went well - 10 meters was a bit flaky all weekend - looking back
it might have been better starting on 15 meters. Last year Pat had two 180+
hours on 10 meters for the first two hours but I was just not getting enough
callers to get that sort of rate at the start. But the rate was good until
the 04z hour when it just dropped into the 60's and just stayed there the
rest of the night. Sunday was pretty much as I expected. Until the 21z hour
when I could not seem to find the right place to call CQ and that hour was
a very poor 47. As always I had a great time - looking forward to next
year - where should I go?

Congratulations to Dan - W7WA on a great finish. And to K5TA and AA5B with
their mostly dipole stations - WOW. Maybe that is what I need to do next
time.
