Session Three
Had so much fun in the last CWT I came back for more. Had the speed set to 29
wpm this time and didn't ask anyone to QRS! (not even NW2K or K0AD) However, I
DID slow down to slower callers' speeds (without - ahem - being asked.)
Bands, including 20, were very noisy. That and QSB made things quite
difficult.
Just for fun I dropped down to 160 briefly near the end, expecting to find no
one. Well, well, there's AE6Y, not particularly strong but we made the Q.
Then, WHOAH!! WHAT'S THIS? It's N6RO at a solid S9 on my 30 ft high inverted
L with radials occupying only a 90 degree sector pointing SE. Probably the
strongest signal I've ever worked on the Inv L.
Haven't done many cw contests in the last couple of years and find I'm getting
rusty. Things like forgetting to pay attention when the first character of the
# is sent don't help. Neither does using a keyboard with one foot missing and
occasional characters getting dropped. This last one is easy to fix - get a
decent keyboard.
I intend to work on the rust by being a frequent participant in Wed evening
sessions.
It was really nice to be called by my old buddy KI7Y a couple of times and
certainly recognized lots of calls from other contests.
As part of the Surrey ARC (VE7SAR) ongoing op training I'll be putting on a
presentation at the next meeting on what CWops is all about and how it can be
used for developing/improving cw skills. For Field Day we currently have four
very competent contest cw ops, including a former WRTC competitor, three who
are working at it and three who don't know it but I've got my eye on them.
I find it very sad that many of our local clubs count themselves lucky if they
have one competent cw op for FD. I suspect that it's the same elsewhere.
Anyone who worked me who is also chasing ARRL Centennial points is due for a
pleasant surprise. As a Charter Life Member of the ARRL I'm worth 100 points
to you (and so, I believe, is K4BAI).
So, I handed out 11,400 points.
73, Jim VE7FO
