Comments:
Another 50+ hours without sleep managed with only 3 one-minute ‘leak
breaks’. The weather was OK, allowing full time operation so after the SSB
part I spend yet another weekend in the chair. This time it was not full time
live streaming because we have been focusing on station reconfiguration on
Friday, but on Saturday 4O3A video was available live to the whole world.
General comments are again that propagation was normal (for me that means
nothing extraordinary, I have not experienced excellent openings for quite some
time) resulting in less pile ups than I was hoping for. Ten was almost dead on
Saturday morning, low activity, a couple of hours opening to NA in the
afternoon. 20m slowed down very early, forcing me to QSY full time to low bands
too early, between 1800-1900 hours, thus keeping the average points below 2. The
rest was regular hard work, finishing first day with 3700+ Qs and 4,8 million
points. Sunday propagation was even worst, very few Qs on 10/15m and low
response to my QSY requests, so multiplier total was below planned 550+/170+-.
Missed too many easy ones, expected some during the last hours but somehow
neither could I find them nor they called me, despite my moves from band to
band. The rates were below expected, resulting with only 6409 Qs in the log
(excluding 178 dupes!). Looking at other scores, including M/S from the region,
at the end totals are not too bad, considering that high bands were marginally
open and closed very early, so no long lasting NA pile ups without EU callers.
With poor propagation and not much practice, I had to focus on weak signals so
SO2R was mainly used in the old fashioned way, however, just for fun I had a
few simultaneous runs on both radios. After reading ZF2MJ/N6MJ comments one
can only admire what Dan has done! Great job, showing us the way forward.
Ranko, you are leader in the hardware contesting innovations, but hats off to
Dan on operating technique innovations.
As this time I was piloting a full time test of the new SO2R Genius Interface
" Modem Some, I wish to share feedback on the new toys. I’ve enjoyed
simplicity and flexibility. As a firmware guru, also known as ‘Spider’ was
on the site, after the initial test on Friday my additional wishes have been
within minutes converted into a new firmware. A quick reset of the Genius and
new SO2R features were there! Except two Yaesu radios, all other automation
and switching devices were from the ‘4O3A Signature’ production line and
worked like a charm. The whole station is now on the LAN network, offering full
configuration and reconfiguration using a customized Win application, showing
status on the monitor. The SO2R or Multi Op. setup can now be configured
without a need for re-cabling the shack. Using the tools was really easy, not
many buttons to mess around, easy to read large fonts showing actual status of
each radio, ability to quickly switch between the Genius pre-programed focuses
(heavy/plain pile up, manual) or to switch to Win Test focuses with a press on
the button. Latest CQ WW recording requirement has been also added, with
separate potentiometer on the front panel for each channel. There is also built
in key with a speed knob and that’s it. Those sitting for a 48 hours will
appreciate less gadgets and knobs without reduced features. As I had two LAN
connected interfaces/modems, I could set different speed for R2 and change it
quickly based on what I hear.
Thanks to Ranko and his team for the efforts done to keep 4O3A super station
even better and all who called me during the contest.
