Comments:

Whilst enjoying my holidays in FG, I decided to take part in the CQWW CW contest
in the Low Power category (15m unassisted). I attached a pulley at a height of
7m to my mast and attached inverted Vs aimed to the north, with a view to
covering both NA and EU. At the crack of dawn on Saturday, the band was already
open to EU. Once the first spots from the skimmers hit the network, the pileup
grew quickly. My rate was hit by badly by the behaviour of many Europeans.
Keeping hold of a run frequency with low power also proved difficult. A few
visitors came and tried to prise the frequency from me by force. In this
category of “amateurs”, the award goes out to IT9CLN with two attempts of
“frequency theft” in the same 12hr period! He was soon to be joined by a
few others in this “category”: AA1QD, DL1NEO, F5PCV and IR2L. Others were
more discreet with their intent. 3Z1K, G5O and K5KU all came within 300 or
400Hz of me. I had some difficulty getting my “FG/” call across to
correspondents. Of course, one could have opted for a “TO” callsign, but
that brings other (DXCC) identity issues with it. All in all, despite a
moderate final score, and taking the band conditions in to account, I took away
plenty of lessons learned from the experience.
