Comments:
I set up Saturday night, intending to do a very casual Mixed operation on
Sunday. The band had been great during CQ WW CW, and I would be fresh meat.
Might be a little fun.
Instead, Sunday turned into a Duh! operation. Sunday morning early, the TS-850
receive function went dead. At first I had some receive function on the lower
bands, but nothing on the higher bands. After a little fooling around, receive
was completely dead. Transmit seemed OK.
I had N6XI's K2 available, but interfacing it with the CT-DOS computer would
have been a major hassle. So, I spent Sunday's contest time doing useful
things and enjoying the fantastic wx outside and pondering how to fix the '850
(with no test equipment besides a VOM) or if I was going to have to replace
it.
Returning from a nice long walk with my wife I saw neighbor K2PBS raking
leaves. I stopped to commiserate with Jay. After expressing his sympathy, he
said that he had once had a similar problem, and it turned out that his rcvr's
squelch had gotten set on. Had I checked that?
Squelch? HF transceivers have squelch? Can't be -- they're too big to hang on
your belt.
I get home and peer at the TS-850's front panel. Such tiny letters! So many
knobs and buttons! (The TS-850 really is to complicated for me. Everybody
else is upgrading to K-3's and SDR's and such. I'm thinking how easy it was to
operate my Heathkit AR-3.) Aha! There's a knob labeled Squelch. A small twist
CCW, and the radio comes alive. QRV!!!
By that time there was but little propagation and about zero fresh meat effect.
Two hours, 71 QSOs, five South American countries, and 14 "states".
The claimed score is from CT-DOS, which seems not to know how to count Mexican
states. Maybe I'll have a negative score reduction. Perhaps I can save it for
the next Poisson d'Avril.
