My score is 14 per cent lower than last year. Last year I started out with 495
contacts the first two hours on 20m. This year I had 243 for the first two
hours on 20 meters. I had a clear frequency but wasn't getting answers to my
CQ's. After the first 24 hours my score was down 27 per cent from last year
and I never reached any of my hourly totals from last year during the first
day. I thought that activity was lower but there are some scores out there
that debunks that theory. I made up some of the deficit on Sunday for no
particular reason. I have very different propagation than Caribbean stations
but I am still at a loss to figure out why my score is so much lower at the
same location and same operating time.

The high bands seemed slow to open on Sunday and that may have forced more
people from European runs to the east and southeast direction. It is still no
surprise that I have no propagation to the mid-Atlantic and northeast on 10
meters and somewhat limited on 15 meters. I did pick up a few mulitpliers by
beaming northeast and making contact via back scatter mode.

I did some cost per contact calculations taking into account my airfare and
cost of accommodation. Each contact in the contest cost 27 cents. So I am
going to send out a blanket e-mail to all my contacts asking them to send me 27
cents per band contact. For those of serious mind, this is a joke. I achieved
my objective of having a great time. I enjoyed all the "Hi Kurt's".
Many of you I have never met but this camaraderie is pervasive in our hobby.
Thanks.

Again this would not be possible if it wasn't for my good friend Ed, VP9GE. He
bends over backward to make everything work. This was my 16th year of operating
here and I hope for a few more before I hang it up. I just had my 73rd
birthday.

73, Kurt W6PH
