Comments:
Many things have to go right for QRP to do well in a major
contest. This was not one of those weekends.
Summertime conditions reduced signal strengths during
morning and early afternoon. Those few decibels makes
all the difference. I did little operating during those
periods since my rate was very low. I also must have 10
and 15 available to do well. 10 was almost non-existent
and 15 only performed late afternoon and evening. This
cost me hundreds of QSOs. I did 95% S&P since running
was near impossible.
I very nearly quit the contest at noon on Saturday. But
things did pick up nicely in late afternoon, so I was
able to begin making up some ground. It was frustrating
to hear so much of the world coming through around the
clock, yet with signals too weak for them to hear me.
My strategy was to ignore most of the world to focus on
Europe and the US. Prefixes aplenty were there without
chasing DX with weak propagation. My most productive bands
were 20 and 40. Unexpectedly 15 became very good for me
late Sunday afternoon to Europe and west Asia. I
didn't work a single JA all weekend.
