Comments:
In contrast with last year's effort when I deliberately started late, I started
on time and it was the right decision. I was fearful of being able to hear
anyone well since a new power line arc noise source erupted in the neighborhood
about 10 days ago (S7 to S9 noise across all HF bands). It turned out to be
inconsequential for my score - I rarely had to ask for repeats of any element
of the exchange. So much for pre-contest psyching myself out of the
game.......
Although I had planned a full 24 hour effort, family issues intervened to
disrupt Sunday afternoon and evening and I had to be content with fewer hours
in the chair than last year. I had hoped to make the sweep after hitting 82
sections last year, but alas.....never heard a peep from AK or NT, and
heard/chased ND, EWA, and UT without success. Not very long into the contest I
had the uncanny sense that everybody was in U-class - is there really such a big
shift underway?
A doff of the QRP hat to Ward N0AX, Alan K0AV, and Mike N7MH for showing what's
possible in SS CW with 5 watts. It was humbling to hear Alan Sunday morning and
find his Q count about a hundred higher than mine, but when I worked Ward about
mid-day Sunday he was two hundred Qs ahead - downright crushing!
My great thanks go to the many patient ops who sought repeats of my exchange
until the Q was made. Special mention goes to Bert, N4CW for his persistence
in getting my exchange right, element by element, on 80 meters where my antenna
is less than sub-optimum. He's no stranger to being on the QRP end in
contests.
Thanks to all for such fun - it reminds me of my traffic handling days on the
Michigan QMN net, only much faster and with more thrills.
73,
Mike, K8CN
Rig: K3 @ 5W to a Lazy H (cut for 20 meters, used on all bands with the help of
a Johnson Matchbox because that's all I've got up for the moment!)
