Comments:
Fantastic contest. Even with 10 meters being down, the other bands more than
picked up the slack. Those of us in the northern edge of the country really
appreciated the quiet polar conditions.
Contest got off to an unexpectedly rocky start. I heard 7J1AAI at about 30
mins before contest start on 15, and was chatting a bit when I noticed that the
10/15 rotary tower was still pointed at EU. While rotating it to JA, the 15m
antenna just died! I knew it had to be a problem with the rotator loop of
coax. Fortunately it is at ground level. But it was below zero and already
dark, so fixing it added some extra excitement.
My wife was watching the band scope while I was fixing it and talking to me
outdoors on a 49 mhz radio. I got it fixed at 0001Z, and she told me that the
band scope simply exploded! That's the WW!
The Saturday night Asian opening here was another very good one, even if it
didn't stay open as late on 15m, the quality of the 20m opening more than made
up for it. Then I was pleasantly surprised to hear 40m to EU in outstanding
shape. There was a lot more real estate on that band with some of the EU to EU
frenzy worked out over the previous 24 hours. I ended up around 7075 or so, and
it was great -- even if the rates were only so-so.
80 meters was another great band here -- after 0300 UTC or so EU became pretty
easily workable. By contrast, during the SSB WW I couldn't even get zone 33
guys to hear me.
The JA activity was great, thank you very much. The number of BY's and YB's
continues to rise as well. The radar took the weekend off, and even the SSB
people on the low end of 40 were driven off, at least for 48 hours.
I must say that the operating style of never sending your call seems to have
returned, after about a year of improvement. I think the pileups calling are
partly to blame. Everyone has their call set to go with a function key, and
they just can't resist (apparently) sending it, even when the DX station has
clearly not stopped sending. Why? Too often when the fellow running the
pileup finally sent his call, it was obliterated by the callers all hitting
their keyboard as soon as he got to the "TU". Are we all drinking
too much coffee? Here's a contest tip -- listen! The person who hits F1 first
does not win!
I think ZF2MG made something like 10K QSO's single op and he ID'd every single
time. It got to be very frustrating when station after station simply sent
TU.
Congrats to all the high (and low/medium, for that matter) scorers, and let's
hope we're all around for the next one.
RIP KL7RA.
