Comments:
I had the weekend off and a new amp that needed breaking in. My K3 was getting a
screen print of 50.280.00 from testing out the new WSJT-X/MSK144 software so I
needed to move the VFO a bit. Weather forecasts for my area were for 5-7
inches of snow and temperatures in the teens but there wasn't enough ice on the
lakes for fishing. Given all that, I hopped on the ARRL page to see if any of
the Wisconsin section record could be broken in the 10M contest. Sure enough,
W9JA had a score of 55.5k in the SOHP SSB unlimited category from 2014. He had
a whopping 108 mults but only 264 QSOs. I did a few calculations and figured I
would gamble for a couple decent sporadic Es openings and hope for some high
rate runs to get my QSO totals up, knowing that I won’t be able to get the
mults that there were in the “golden days”.
Friday night only netted 9 QSOs with my Minnesota neighbors and a few meteor
scatter contacts with AA1JD, W1TJL, WB5R, and KB5KYJ. On Saturday, I woke
around 12z and noticed some W1 beacons. I worked N1ATO, KK1K, WC3N, and K1VMT
in ME and VT. They were the only ones in for about an hour and were all loud.
A nice sporadic Es cloud developed and I worked some bigger stations down the
east coast. At 14z, the cloud moved south and I had some decent rates toward
the Carolina's, FL, and GA until 20z. I had worked a total of 64 GA stations
which was the most of any section.
I fell asleep putting my 2 year old to nap and at around 21:30z I got back in
the shack and noticed my panadapter was FULL of signals. I found a clear
frequency and had an instant pileup of W2, W3, and W4’s. I managed to work a
true 182/hour from 21:30z to 22:30z and a best 10 minute rate of 258/hour. I
got my first 7 QSOs/minute rate on the CBS log analyzer. It was the most fun I
had in a long time of radio contesting.
The band closed at 23z and I had 588 QSOs and a potential new WI section
record. I hoped I could put the record to bed on Sunday but there was no
sporadic Es opening to speak of. Other than V55DX, It was the typical South
American QSO Party and only 40 QSOs were made the whole day. I spent some time
listening to K0TT and he was doing a great job from MN. I hope to get a 10M LFA
up someday.
73,
Justin, K9MU
