Comments:
Tough conditions from the northwoods of Wisconsin! But everyone who came out
had a fun time as usual. Always fun to hang out with Paul for the weekend!
The highlight of the weekend was giving the new W0AIH yagi the smoke test. And
reports from the guys who used it was that it was a good 2-3 S units stronger to
Europe than the 4-square which isn't too shabby an antenna in itself! So things
look promising. For this contest, rotator cables hadn't made it up to the
chalet yet, so it remained fixed on Europe. 43 of the 315 qso's were with
Europe under horrible absorption conditions and K index of 3-5 all weekend.
40 meters had its big gun antenna (3 elements @200 feet) on the disabled list.
Luckily there is a 3 element @75 feet and Rhombics to get by! Only 53 Europe
and a midnight run to zone 15 and 16 that netted some new multipliers.
20 meters was the money band and made 294 contacts with Europe, but only 30
with Japan. Highlights were a great Sunday morning run to Europe along with a
run of 3 to zone 22 VU during that same timeframe! By comparison, Saturday was
much worse.
15 meters only netted 62 European contacts and all were made skew path 110
degrees.
10 meters had ZERO European QSO's. 178 of its 265 contacts were South
America.
Justin K9MU reported that the OH0TEN/B beacon was coming in loud and clear for
about an hour Saturday evening 0230Z. But CQ's pointed north didn't attract
any callers. He did make ONE JA qso ...with the stack pointed at 190 degrees!
(direct path is 320)
Paul, W0AIH reported tough noisy conditions on 160, but dug out 162 contacts.
6 with Europe and 8 with Africa. 11 more to South America.
For this contest, as we have been doing for several years, we divided up into 2
man band teams. Each team keeps his band humming and schedules there own
operating and sleep times. Seems to work pretty well!
This years team: (missing a few regulars)
10/40 W0UC and K0MPH
15/80 K9MU and K0BBC
20 NE9U and KK9K
160 W0AIH
N9ISN floated around the bands for the Saturday night shift, and AA0EE was out
for Sunday afternoon to help out on 10, 15, and 40 after a couple guys went
home.
See everyone in CQWW CW!
