Comments:

Things went about as expected, but the bands were a little strange. Some things
were good and some not so good.

Couple of notes about contacts: N5PHT, Gary, you were as loud as I have ever
heard you on 20 meters, just a booming signal in here. And I was happy to get
Jim, K8MR, on 2 bands from his sunny winter abode. Also worked Jeff, K8ND at
/PJ2 on 80 and 160. Good signals here, Jeff.

Some rates were good, and I was able to keep them up for almost all the
contest, but the wheels fell off in my last hour and I wasn’t able to keep
them up enough to get to 600 QSOs. Close, but no cigar. Maybe next time.

There have been recent comments about stations that habitually call off
frequency, and I had issues with that in this contest. When I was calling CQ I
never tightened my RX filter under 400Hz, and I still had stations calling me
so far off frequency that at first I thought it was someone moving in and
calling CQ next door to me. I had to use the RIT a lot to get them in the log.
C’mon, guys, learn whet your rig sounds like, and what tone you should be
hearing when you’re on frequency. You’ll save time for the station calling
CQ, and for yourself as well.

Speaking of saving time, there was still the perennial problem with stations
that think they’re saving time and improving their rate by not identifying at
least every other Q. Some would sit there and just go on and on with no ID. Some
of these lost me for a QSO, because I won’t wait around for them to get a
clue. There are other stations to work.

All in all, I had a good time in this event. Had some good rates, worked some
friends and generally made it all worthwhile. I got K3WA and NC4KW on four
bands out of the five I had contacts on (couldn’t find anything on 10
meters). I had 21 stations on three bands, including John, K4BAI, and Jeff,
KU8E, nice to see you guys, thanks for the QSOs!

It was fun, and a good time was had by all, I believe. Thanks to everyone for
the QSOs, and see you in the next one!
