Good grief!

Worst of summer mid-August QRN in January. That's 15 to 30 over S9 QRN peaks
listening in SSB bandwidths, 15 times CW. Then make it worse with
band-gone-long conditions underneath. Then make it worse with everyone running
SSB one quarter to one half the CW signal density. Then make it worse with low
power all around. Then make it worse with band-going-long winter propagation of
multi-megawatt lightning QRN from other continents making a continuous din of
the QRN. Very easy to see this happening watching
http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php while listening to QRN. This
last issue is one we don't have to put up with in the August NAQP, making this
January edition the worst possible case for QRN. Global warming, anyone?

Well, going to get on the air regardless for the club participation multiplier.

Checked all the low bands to see if any had an advantage and some numbers.
Nope. The P3/SVGA display told the entire story. Compared to the CW version at
the same times, not even a tenth of the signals on the display last night.

Never a greater example of the advantages of narrow bandwidth, high signal
density CW.

It's the same for everyone else, so it's fair. But brain damage? Old time CW
traffic nets on 80m in the summertime QRN had the advantages of narrow CW
crystal filter selectivity and an 810 or pair of 811's to get the signal up for
the poor soul on the other end.

Rig: K3
Antennas: 40 inverted vee plus 80/160 Inverted L over FCP.
