Real vacation style operation.
We arrived on Tuesday evening, with casual operation target and I also wanted to
spent some time in ARRL SSB.
Wednesday was spent shopping for food, fruits, etc. We (me and Ark UA4CC) manged
to erect 160m Tee with 14m vertical part.
In the swamp abput 70 m from ocean coast (wrong side). Also managed to lay 4pcs
15-20m radials almost in the dark.
Resonated in right spot with R close to 50 ohm. We thought it was not bad.
(turned to be really bad).
Swithched on radio - high noise - 59+ - all bands. Tried to CQ - only PJ2A's RBN
gave us just 6dB.
Thursday. Started with adding radials. Not easy with +29C and humidity at 90%.
Not very confortable - who knows who lives in that grass.
Check this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NsvOxRQfFs
With 14 radials in total R dropped to 14 ohm. Good! Just the problem how to tune
it to coax with basically
nothing on hansds.
Ended up with 2.8 uH parallel coil, which was 8 winds on coke (empty) bottle.
Adjusted length of T wires
for resonance - another challenge with all these bushes and grass around. VSWR
perfect and very narrow bandwith - as in books.
VSWR goes up from 1.1 to 1.7 in +-20 kHz.
Then we raised other fiber glass mast and put super duper multiband OCF Windom
with apex at 10m with 30m invVee 2m below.
Also put 200m Beverage on the the beach line on bushes and palm trees. Raised
2-3 m from sand. We had big doubt if that will work with
distance ~25m low tide, 3-5m at high tide. 4 radials 5m both ends. Direction to
EU - only one option we had.
Surprise - it works!
Tried to operate - very high noise on 160-80-40, Beverage helped in all
directions.
Friday - no new installations, site seeing, bands checking.
Contest
started very slowly, went to sleep after some QSOs on 40, not much heard on
80.
I went to sleep with no motivation to wake up early.
Next morning 20m was no-go and it became clear that multiband antenna is just
great noise collector and good dummy load.
Some stations worked on 15 but not easy.
It took about 1 hour to hang 15m dipole with top at about 5m. Game changed just
it was too late for 15.
Changed to 20 - being fresh meat and new mult for most kept me busy for 3 hours.
Then dinner, trip to 40-80-160. No joy.
Had 2 hour nap and returned to 80-160 with some success. Then 40.
Nothing on 20, then some rate on 15 and then we went to replace OCF windom
dipole (whatever it called) to simple invVee for 40/20.
It took us 90 minutes. 15 was hot when I restarted. Then K5TR pushed me to 10m.
Thanks! Nice opening. Used 30m dipole on 10.
45 QSO first 10 minutes but slowed down then - no antenna, no callers.
Some more QSO on 15, then great rate (for me) on 20 - proved that dipole is
antenna! OCF multiband - NO NO NO NO! NO NO!
I didn't check new 40, but it works now.
Contest is over, but:
Monday
Local guy climbed palm tree and now we have 80m dipole with apex at 15m.
We found one lamp-QRN generator. It is off now.
Vacations go on!
