Comments:
I knew coming in that I wouldnt be able to do a full 48 hour effort. This trip
was a last minute decision, and I took the redeye down on Thursday night. I
didn't get to the station until about 5 hours before the start. Luckily, John
K6AM was able to do most of the set up for me before he left for home a few days
before the contest. All I had to do was set up the 2nd IC7610 and I was ready
to go. Unfortunately I wasn't able to sleep much on the plane, and there wasn't
any additional time left for a nap prior to the contest. All that being said, I
thought for sure I could make it through the first night. It was not to be, as
only 9 hours in I was feeling ill with a really bad headache that wouldnt go
away. I decided to lay down for a while but it didn't help. I ended up taking
several breaks throughout the weekend just to keep my sanity.
The good news is all the equipment worked great. I was impressed with the
IC7610's. They were very easy on the ears and I had no problem at all digging
out weak signals or pulling out calls in big pile ups. The new RA6LBS gear also
worked flawlessly. The station has really come a long way in a short time. I
am very excited for the future.
Congrats again to Tom 8P5A for the well deserved win. I keep hoping that one of
these years 10m will cooperate from ZF, but being so close to the mainland has
its disadvantages. It will probably be a few more years until that happens.
This year 15m was a huge disappointment as well. Only managed around 300 q's on
Saturday, and it didn't open until 18z on Sunday when the flood gates finally
opened.
Best Q of the weekend was when VY0ERC moved me from 20 to 40 in the last 30
minutes of the contest. He wasn't loud but I could hear him fine. It was a
nice way to end the contest.
Thanks for all the Q's and QSY's.
73,
Dan N6MJ
