This year’s PJ2T WPX M/M Contest was Fun and a great learning experience for
the Team.

Congratulations to the 2 European youngsters who worked at this station before
traveling to PJ4V and posting a great WPX score.

Through the superb effort of Geoff, W0CG and Gene, KB7Q and their wives weeks
before this contest, many station improvements were accomplished and the
antennas, the freshened amplifiers and shack were ready for radio installation
and logging software setup. K1ZN was contest director, and K8PGJ served as the
lead contester, suggesting operator assignments and best contest strategy. The 4
K3’s were upgraded with DVR’s and 2.1 KHz filters and ready to go. Gene had
loaded N1MM+ general logging software and the station was ready for a learning
exercise.

The 2018 CQ WPX Contest consisted of members of the Southeastern DX Club /
Fayette County Georgia ARC (AG4F, K1ZN, KI4DSO, WT4BT, KV4UD) and were joined by
two Caribbean Contest Consortium Team Members (K8PGJ & KB7Q) and a walk-in
former German Contester, KF4DX.

Briefing discussions on the antennas, the very present antenna switching maze,
K3 radios and the N1MM+ software ensued. Individual logging for fun and
equipment understanding occurred on the 3 days leading up to the event.
Propagation those days was consistent and quiet. A few thousand individual
pre-contest contacts were achieved.

The weather for the week was great and we utilized the rental house pool during
off times. Meals were provided by K1ZN’s wife, Ruth, and the food was great.
We did see a change in SWR in the stacked yagis on 10M so we planned to utilize
an optional antenna.

The contest started and we had 15Db noise on 40M and Propagation went away for a
while on 20M as we waited for the long bands to come on. Murphy was thinking.
>From this point out the solar conditions stabilized. Night conditions were good
but the amount of players on 160 and 80 meters seemed down. 20m all weekend
seemed distant and propagation maps favored the US to Europe Path. 15M all
weekend was great and 10 meters opened mostly north to south about 1600Z on
Saturday and carried on till 0000Z. 15M was the surprise band for the weekend
and it opened early from Europe and the States, stayed open and was very quiet.

All the operators had opportunities to challenge all the bands at different
operating times with individual speed improving thorough. We had walk-in guest
Ham from the Netherlands show up and well as some from the Islands and they
enjoyed talk of the 50 year history of the station and the action in front of
them. We even attempted a quick course on synthesized speech on 20M.

Murphy provided no power interruptions although we heard that a large chunk of
the island was out of power for three hours on Saturday and the internet stayed
alive. Our sense of the successes of other stations drove us to keep all the
radios manned to the end and this forged new friendships among the team and
visitors. The Rookies became Contesters and the final score is a testament to
their determination.
