Few random thoughts.
Conditions were outstanding on the low bands. It was fun jumping across 5 bands
in the last hour or two to work multipliers. Excited to work RM9A on 160 at
sunset. Those guys did an outstanding M/M effort. The SE Asia stations were
workable in the last hour on 20m and added some fun multipliers.
Speaking of sunset, there was something that happened which was new for me. I
have a 800 foot beverage toward Europe. I went to 40 meters very early - like
about 2 PM local (4 hours before sunset) in order to get away from the raging
pileup I was generating on 20 every time I called CQ :-) Until sunset on 160, 80
and 40 the little delta loop RX antenna I had pointed NW was MUCH better for the
Europeans than the Beverage. I supposed that my beverage was either broken or
the signals were actually following the grey line coming from North to South. I
think the later was the case since the Beverage came to life as soon as I had
darkness between me and Europe. You learn something new every day.
The work I did on horizontal antennas paid off in a big way when working places
where a salt water path is not available for a vertical.
African and Southeast Asia activity was great. The only QSO I made in the
contest with a vertical was with the JD1 on 20m. He was very weak. I called
once with a 2L Yagi at 60 feet and didn't get him. I switched to a quarter wave
vertical about 4 feet from the water and got him on the next call.
The reason I entered assisted was not to come in second place out of two entries
from ZF :-). The score would probably have been better unassisted because I
would not spend the whole contest clicking on spots to try to work as many
countries as possible. I realized I was just in it for my own enjoyment when I
would leave a rate meter of over 200 and go call hard to work multipliers when
N1MM was telling me that a multiplier was only worth 4 QSOS.
At my current skill level I can work WAY more contacts per hour with a small,
steady pileup than with a raging one. Need to acquire some discipline in order
to stay in the chair and keep at it with a big pileup. You would think I was
the only ZF on the air and had just gotten on 20 meters toward the end of the
contest. I took it for the first 2 hours of the contest and then looked at the
spots and got lazy. I never let more than two or three workable multipliers
become available without leaving a CQ frequency to go to work them. I don't
think my stack of tribanders is doing anything for me , and I need to hook up
the bottom tribander as a receive antenna in order to attempt to use two radios
on the high bands. Even so, I have to learn to do it efficiently.
One time I called CQ on 160 and the pileup was so big I just could not manage
it. I turned the amplifier off jacked the power on my TS-590S up to 60W and
continued until the pileup got too small. There were many Europeans who didn't
seem to have any problems hearing my 60W signal.
I would like to hear from other guys about how narrow or wide they set their
filter when the pileup is huge. I think I learned Sunday afternoon that I do
better with the filter kinda wide open as opposed to narrow.
I had no idea what was going on at the time but I must have gone back to a
partial call sign ( perhaps AM ENN 8) several times? Try turning the volume up
a little in the middle of a big WW contest on Sunday afternoon after no sleep
and see what it is like to have the radio switch to the AM mode two or three
times. That will wake you up in a hurry!
One thing that was great about this contest was there were very few dupes. The
RBN network must have done something to fix the bad spots. I don't know the
number but think there were probably fewer than a dozen people who are in my log
more than once on the same band.
Ok, enough of my random thoughts. I appreciate all the contacts. It is a fun
hobby and I am really enjoying it.
