Comments:
What a weekend! CQWW is still the best contest on the calendar. Same great crew
as last year but we definitely missed our friend Hiro JJ5GMJ this time.
Matt recently added antennas on 160m: E/W dipole and N/S dipoles at 200 feet.
Very interesting to see the effectiveness of these antennas at certain times
compared to the phased verticals. Matt KC1XX, Bob WA1Z, and John W1FV spent a
bit of time tuning the verticals again (optimizing gain) after we had some
issues during CQWW SSB. Everything is working great again on 160m.
160-20m were amazing - 15/10m less so. At these low SFI numbers and due to our
QTH, 20m closes down quickly at sunset. Very narrow window to Japan and almost
no window to work BY except possibly on long path. Missed zones 23, 24, 29, and
34 on 20m. Very spotty openings on 15m and 10m was more or less closed shut! We
were very happy to score over 1M points more than last year!
Lots of great DX available all weekend and some generally great ops on the other
end of the pileups. Seems that ops are getting better at pileup discipline - a
good thing to see! Special thanks to all the ops who activated the many
multiplers available to all of us this weekend.
Thanks to Matt and Juana for their excellent hospitality! Most multi-op stations
are a huge undertaking - operating is only a small (but important) part of it.
Keeping all the antennas working and everything in the station optimized is a
*lot* of work that is never finished - thanks to Matt with help from the rest of
the crew as well - but he's the one who drives the efforts and keeps it all
going.
