Comments:
What a fantastic contest. Let me say that the classic category is definitely a
great one. You don't need to devote the entire weekend to the contest and you
can enjoy it and be quite competitive as well measuring with other people that
need to face the fact that putting in a full effort may be impossible.
I was tired for a number of reasons and I was not feeling like operating a full
CQWW. Was not really in a mood for a single band entry and all I wanted was to
switch off the brain and have fun on the bands (propagation allowing). I decided
to go SOAB LP Classic overlay.
Operated for my pleasure with no targets at all. Took off-times and did other
chores in the house. I operated in a relaxed way although stress and life
fatigues accumulated during the weeks before the contest made me lose
concentration and feel tired even after a couple of hours of operations.
Three hours into the contest I was 110% sure to be running 20m and was wondering
why the skip was so short that not even a single EU Russia was calling in.
Obviously my radio was tuned to 7018 and I was running 40m over the past half an
hour. Time for a break!
Low bands were amazing. 80m better than 40m for me but my 40m wire is much of a
dummy load while my 80m (sort of) inverted L plays just fine.
15 and 10m were disappointing with weird propagation. I missed lots of easy
mults like LU/PY/ Zone 11 that are ususally out in force on 15m. On the other
hand I could work some US stations with singals that were at the noise level.
Propagation on 10 was a nightmare. I frequently moved to sweep the empty 10m
band and in rare occasions I could work a couple of stations. Noteworthy a G4
station that was S9+ when I called him and S0 at the end of the few seconds QSO.
Couldn't even hear any italian to get the country mult. Luckily IK3TPP called in
on 20m and I begged him for QSY on 10 and then on 15. Gladly he acknowledged and
moved. Only Italian station heard on those two bands.
Other than that I had fun, tons of fun. I got called by CN3A on 160m, I worked a
VK2 on 40, I did 1000+ QSOs on 24h and more than half a million points and had
the chance to hand out some points to some friends. All that without the use of
the cluster and with my very modest station capable of running only 100W into
"crappy antennas".
Would I do it again? Definitely, right now!
