Comments:
This was my third year operating from the TI7W station in CQWW CW.
It always seems appropriate to have CQWW CW on Thanksgiving. I am so thankful
to have the opportunity to hang out with Kam and his family for a week while
piloting an incredible station for the biggest contest of the year!
Every year the station gets better, and this year we were loaded for bear.
10m: 2xOB17-4, 5el fixed SE, 5el fixed SW
15m: 2xOB17-4, 5el fixed SE, 5el fixed SW
20m: 2xOB17-4, 4 el fixed South
40m: 2xOB17-4
80m: 3el wire yagi to EU, 4el wire yagi to JA
160m: Full size loop, EU Beverage
The OB17-4's are fed with RA6LBS Quadplexers, and are on different towers.
Rigs: 2x Flex 6600M
Amps: 2x ACOM 2000A
We had our share of pre-contest issues, but worked through them well enough to
be close to 100% at the starting bell. The biggest problem was the noise that
plagued me in 2017 came back on Wednesday. We had no luck finding it
unfortunately. That really hurt 20 and 15m to JA and west coast USA. It
definitely cost a couple hundred QSO's, but such is life. The 15 and 20m JA
numbers reflect the noise problem more so than the conditions. Sorry for anyone
I couldn't pull out. Moving the 5/5 10 and 15m antennas to be fixed SW and SE
was outstanding! It added several Q's, but mostly just made things easier for
working Pacific and South America. After ZL3IO was vocal about not getting
through to TI7W due to 2BSIQ issues, I was happy we fixed that problem. (Note,
it wasn't a 2BSIQ issue last year, it was a noise issue while also being pointed
away from ZL.) Many easy ZL QSO's this year, including ZM4T.
Zone 7 is not a CQWW winning QTH, but it sure is fun! Disappointed to not get
any 10 meters as that could be our "ace in the hole" at times. EU
openings were short and weak on 10 and 15 as expected. But 40-160... wow. As
others have noted it was something special. There were lots more EU to work on
160m, but it didn't seem like a good idea to stick around any longer as 80m had
a higher potential. Probably missed some mults there, but I think my overall
plan was best.
For the first time ever, I had to completely re-learn how to operate the radios.
The Flex setup was interesting, but I got pretty comfortable with it over the
few days prior. Things were not perfect, as we are truly contesting on the
edge.
Congratulations to our friend Jose, CT1BOH, for his claimed new record.
Breaking a record that has stood for 18 years at the bottom of the cycle is just
awesome. Hopefully it holds after log check! Can't wait to see what things
will look like when the high bands improve in a few years.
The real competition for Team TI7W was with our fellow 2 point land ops ZF1A and
V47T. Knowing they were pushing 100% always keeps me motivated. Per usual, we
were operating very different contests. What a great race!
Very few people understand how hard 2BSIQ is for 48 hours. My hat is off to
everyone who managed this feat again.
I would love to try this one from a 3 point land station capable of giving Jose
a run for his money.
Thanks to everyone for the QSO's. This is the BEST contest of the year!
One more shout out to Kam for putting in COUNTLESS hours and effort into
upgrading the station and maintaining everything in a very challenging part of
the world.
