Comments:
In what has become an annual thing for several years now some mixture of the
same ops have been coming over to my station and doing the CQ WW CW contest M/S.
It has been great fun and this year was no exception. N5RZ and K5PI came over
and did all the good running and I filled in as best I could. This year K5OT
was not able to join us and we missed him.
The station worked well and I do not think we had a single failure.
The low bands were very good and we keep being amazed at how well we do on 80
and 160 considering that I just have a few dipoles/verticals sloped off the same
120 ft tower. 40 meters was the workhorse band and the big 40 meter yagi makes
that band so much fun. 15m just never really opened for us well enough to do
much more than mults. This is usually not a good thing for us - but because 15
was a wash - it seemed to give 20m a boost and we seemed to do pretty well on
20m.
10 meters was really painful - and just never really opened - a few signals
would sneak thorough and we would work a mult here or there but it just was not
good.
This was the second full contest with some new to me Alpha 87 amps. One of them
died late Sunday of the CQ WW DX SSB contest but I was able to get it repaired
and back in service in time for the CW weekend thinks to the fine services of
N4UQ. They worked very well - it sure is strange how quiet it is during a CW
contest now compared to the clunking relays on the two AL-1500 amps we have been
using.
