Comments:

Once again the summer monsoon season here in Sun City West was not kind. The
63ft. Zero-Five-Vertical lost a guy line and and once again snapped in the
middle. So this year Rick decided to try something different. With the help of
Ron, NI7J, he decided to take the mobile Scorpion Antenna, mount it by the
Vertical add some top loading and install a shunt for 160 meters (thank you
Ron). So now we have an antenna we can tune from the shack for low SWR, and run
full power on 80 and 160 without the use of a tuner. Even though condx on 80 and
160 were not that great this weekend, we were still able to determine that the
antenna works well as several European contacts and VR2XAN were worked on 80.
We decided to do a One Radio Multi Single. Mike, W6RW, joined us from Yuma. The
station worked flawlessly from start to finish. The JK Falcon and JK Quattro
from JK Antennas (thank you Ken) worked everything we could hear. Being at the
bottom of the cycle, we knew we were going to be hurting with propagation. We
had no issues working the big gun Europeans, but could not hear the low power
guys. We were teased with some light openings on 10 and 15 meters on Saturday
and Sunday did provide some spotlight openings and a handful of Europeans were
worked on 15. 20 was a struggle on Friday night and Saturday into Saturday
night. Asian runs were steady but not that plentiful. Before our shift change on
Sunday morning, Mike picked up a few nice mults from the middle east that were
not able to hear all weekend. He stated that Europe sounded loud. I sat down and
got a freq. and started running. A few European stations called in then Wham!,
we experienced the biggest amazing pileup from the West Coast I ever had. All in
all it was a fun weekend. Rick kept all of us well fed and hydrated, Thanks
Rick. Our next event will be CQWW CW. I am doing a SOABHP. Thanks to all our
Friends around the World that help make this event the BEST!! 73 from the W0RIC
Contest Station. John, W4IX
