SOAPBOX: Icom IC-706MKIIG at 90 watts output,Heil Pro Micro Headset,Vectronics
HFT-1500 Manual Tuner,and a modified ZS6BKW G5RV up 50 feet,running North-South
at 6,053 feet elevation from Grid Square DN-71 in Laramie County,Wyoming.I made
201 DX contacts in 56 countries during my 20 hours of operating time in this
contest. My single wire,100 watt signal traveled 822,378 miles for all contacts
(with U.S. stations not considered). The average distance per DX (outside of
U.S.)contact was 4,153 miles.I made 45 more contacts than last year,and bettered
my score by 23,000 points.A 100% Hunt and Pounce effort, with MANY repeats
required.I made only 3 difficult contacts on 80 meters,47 on 40 meters,120 on 20
meters,and 31 contacts on 15 meters.I never heard a soul on 10 meters.36% of my
contacts were with the North American Continent,26% with South America,20% with
Europe,7% with Oceania,5% with Asia, and 4% with Africa.Watching the longest
World Series game ever played in history, cut into my operating time just a
bit,but I also went to bed more than once when things got too slow.
NOTE TO DX STATIONS: "QRZ" should be the very last thing to leave your
lips when you are calling stations. If you instead say "QRZ...This is (call
sign),then half of the waiting pile up world will start shouting THEIR CALL
about half a second after they hear you say... "QRZ"! This makes copy
unnecessarily hard for both sides of the contact, and does not help your rate one
bit. Always a fun event, especially for a modest NO TOWER,NO BEAM,NO AMP STATION
like mine,(but it does demonstrate that you can work a lot of DX with 100 watts
and one of those "worthless" G5RV's!). Another "100 Watts and a
Wire, Adventure from my "Caught 'Em on a Corn Dog Station is in the books.
Thanks to all who heard and worked my station. November Seven Many Zebras
