Comments:

My first attempt in a 160m only event, with an outcome I didn't expect. A bit of
background; Charlie W0YG and I collaborated on Christmas Island VK9X back in
2003 and 2005, with Charlie knowing the who's who on 160m, and was one top band
specialist. Charlie has since dropped out of Ham radio, my last visit with
Charlie & Rita in 2014 they was kicking back at a Denver golf course
townhouse...

I did a temporary conversion of one of my 4SQ 40m 3/8 verticals to 160m, using
my old VK9X 160m dipoles as 4 big ground radials. I also made a Pennant Antenna
with Charlies old pre-amp.. The pennant and vertical worked near identical on
RX.. I heard at copyable levels about 4 stations during the weekend, which
tallied with signal strengths I recalled hearing at VK9X.

Two things thwarted a QSO.. My TX power probably wasn't enough, but one station
did respond, so that's probably lame, but the kicker was I can only copy 20wpm
(in clear), and probably 15wpm in marginal conditions.. I think I got a W8 and
a K0 partial who were running at 60+wpm.. ugh..

Anyway, it was fun matching up a 17m tall vertical and listening in on some SSB
QSO's here in Oceania.. At least Charlie taught me how to make low noise
antennas that rock on 160m..

David Burger VK2CZ (also K3HZ), Sydney.
