Comments:

FT contesting seems a little like snail racing. At first the slow pace is
maddening but then you slow down with it and get used to it, more or less.

Curiously my subjective QSO rates were similar between FT4 and FT8. I got more
immediate answers in FT8. FT4 seemed to require extra back and forth and had
many more incomplete QSOs.
