This is a nice contest to wrap up the calendar year. 

I picked 40m for single-band as that's where I have my best antenna, but
conditions weren't good and the band was blanketed with broad-band white noise. 
Mid-afternoon on Saturday the noise floor jumped by an additional 10 dB and made
copy difficult. I hesitated to try running for fear of missing weaker callers.
Later things dropped back to the original noise level. I have no idea what was
going on.
