Comments:
Went in to this one not expecting to do well especially on the low bands due to
an unresolved noise problem - S4 on 160 and S3 on 80 and 40 to the Northeast
(Europe). Beverage doesn't help. I am in a rural area and this noise must be
coming from some distance away. Fortunately the DSP noise rejection filter on
the K3 can pull many signals out of the noise but I know there are lots more I
could normally hear that were covered up. Despite that I topped last year's
score by a good bit thanks to excellent conditions on the low bands. Twenty
meters was also great and I even had a short runable opening to Europe on 15
meters Sunday.
Because I could not hear the weaker callers I did not run much on 80 and not as
much as I normally should have on 40. Certainly reduced my QSO total but higher
mults from more S&P on those bands does help some.
I'm afraid the phone contest will be brutal with low sunspots. With every one
crowded on to 20 meters, trying to run Europe from here is really tough.
