Another enjoyable outing to PZ for the gang from the UK and friends.
This year we were privileged to be joined by Charlie K1XX and Marty
W1MD who brought with them a wealth of know-how and experience for us
to draw on, thanks for making the trip guys.
We always have in mind to improve the set-up year on year and we had
many improvements planned for this year both in the shack and in the
yard. Antenna improvements were mainly on the LF bands, with a
four-square on 80m and 90ft top loaded vertical for 160. They both
worked great, but we were hampered a little by local noise on receive,
so apologies to those who called and we didn’t hear. We did find the
source of the noise, but unfortunately not until after the contest had
finished. In the shack, we had an ambitious set of upgrades to the
antenna control and switching system. A few gotchas came along for the
ride, including a DOA amp, but you can always expect that when you
must travel 5000 miles from home with all the kit. Even so, the
upgrades seemed to be working and by Saturday night we were ahead of
last year’s score. But just at our peak run rate time, we suffered a
power cut, the travelling contesters nightmare. Unfortunately, it was
two and a half hours before the local electricity company resorted the
power and after that, we were always playing catch-up.
Thanks again to our fantastic host Ramon PZ5RA, not only for putting
up with us for another week but for all the help with the antenna
building.
On behalf of "Team Parbo" (PZ5K)
Pete, G4CLA.
