Story below)

My terrific friends at the Tampa ARC (TARC) once again allowed me to invade
their FB shack and antenna farm for the weekend (thanks everyone!).
On Friday I set up a complete SO2R station:
- Run station – K3 and SPE1.3KFA
- S&P station –TS-590S (one of two recently purchased by the club) and
KPA500
TARC antennas:
- 1st tower – Force12 40m 2 el at 110ft, C31XR at 100ft, 80m sloper with top
at 90ft
- 2nd tower – Force12 C19XR at 70ft
- 3rd tower – Force12 XR5 at 50’
FYI - the club has bought three (!!!) more C31XR’s so mighty things may happen
in the future.

The SO2R build went very well, everything working. Lu W4LT was there to help
– thanks buddy! The rusty ole’ Op even practiced a bit since I last touched
SO2R a year ago in SS. All there was left to do was to add a monitor for the
laptop – easy peasy, right? To make room I needed to move the DXDoubler, and
in the process I inadvertently unplugged its power cord – ENTER Mr. Murphy
stage left!

After power up the DXD stopped working and gave my laptop blue screen twice.
Much troubleshooting yielded no fix – either the DXD or the Piexx converter
had bit the dust. !@#$%$#@!
Several head banging hours later I gave up SO2R and readjusted my goals for a
SO1R effort. This included a redoubled effort to improve my rates and copy
accuracy. Along the way to making lemonade from lemons I achieved several
personal bests:
1. Averaged over 100/hour for the first *four* hours – wow! Now THAT was fun.

2. Tried ‘old school’ SO1V – CQ, listen for response, switch VFO’s to
tune and find station, back to VFO A to call CQ. Rinse and repeat. I found my
last three sections this way – AB, NT, WTX (Alan N5NA, you are simply *not*
allowed to move like traitors N5RZ or N5DO! hihi).
I’d like to add special thanks to Gerry and J for the VY1AAA experience –
great job guys. Best wishes to you both.
3. I just stayed happy – even when the DXD/Piexx kicked the bucket. As a
result, this was one of my most pleasant Sweepstakes ever. Passion and Happy
are a FB combination in life.
4. Hoping the log checking report will bring good news too; I worked hard at
copying accurately. We’ll see.
5. Another of my personal bests is working all of you! Just a joy to hear so
many SSCW friends and make new ones. Each contact is just that.

Hope you had a SSS (Super SS) – thanks for the QSO’s and see you next year!

Vy 73,
Chris, NX4N
