Comments:

It's good to have more than one QP going on during the same weekend. Gives
out-of-state participants a chance for steady activity if one QP doesn't have a
lot of stations calling CQ.

That said, it's always a good idea for CQing stations to indicate which QP they
are in and, perhaps, if they are looking for "anyone anywhere" as an
in-state participant or "looking for (state) stations" as an
out-of-state participant. It's hard for out-of-state participants to know from
callsigns who is where or even if that operator is in a host state or just
looking for someone in a host state.

Another help would be if operators would give out the abbreviation for their
county rather than saying the whole name and to use phonetics. Saying the whole
name of the county does not facilitate easy entry into N1MM+, AND not everyone
knows what the three -- or four- -- letter abbreviations are for the respective
state's counties. I had a printout of counties and abbreviations to refer to,
but me looking up the abbreviation is a rather inefficient use of time.

As someone involved behind the scenes in a QP -- the British Columbia QSO Party
-- I know the challenges that organizers face. One is to get people on the air,
especially in-state or in-province because these operators truly are the life of
the party. QPs tend to attract casual operators or people new to the hobby, so
the going may be slow and the CQers and S&Pers might not execute QSOs
perfectly. But if they get familiar with HF and with contests and with
exchanges, maybe, just maybe, they will get on the air for a bigger event, like
NAQP or RAC Canada Day, and maybe, just maybe, they will play in the big
international weekend marathons. And as they learn -- how to call CQ, how to
give and receive required exchanges, how to use a logging program, etc. -- and
gain experience and confidence, they will be supporting not only QPs but the
hobby in general.

The State QSO Party Challenge is a great way to raise awareness of QPs and
attract wider participation. A side-benefit, I hope, will be improved operating
practices.

Stay well. Stay safe. Be kind.
Rebecca VA7BEC
