2020 CQ WW DX Contest CW - OE1CIW SO AB LP
What incredible band propagation on this weekend ... and the new solar cycle 25
has just begun!
With the force of the sun there are lot of things possible - so after a long,
long time we have seen a SFI 110 and 116 during the contest weekend! Mainly we
had extraordinary good conditions but Sunday at 1311 utc we also had a huge
M4.4-Flare at the left limb of the suns surface. This flare was so huge that it
generated an X-ray pulse briefly ionized the upper part of Earth's atmosphere
causing a short-wave radio blackout in these areas - please have a look at this

At this time i was mostly active on 10 and 15 m so i didn´t notice a Mögel
Dellinger effect or sudden ionospheric disturbance (SID).
I started as always on 40 m with S+P because it was really hard to find a free
frequency for my own CQ call. I had contact with KC1XX on 80 m before the
contest started so i knew he could copy me on 80 m also but i thought it would
be better to try 80 m later because after a while the pileup will be not so big.
So i tried that on Sunday morning and i was very exited that i got two US
stations in my log on 80 m with my poor indoor wire! I also heard VE3JM on 80 m
but he didn´t hear me. Btw ... many thanks for the hint of my buddy Erhard
Engfer DL5JQ to use the K3´s RF GAIN knob to reduce the noise level and to get
the signal more clearly - it really works!
Great band conditions also on 10 and 15 m this weekend. I heard VK6LW from
Australia on 10 m very loud and clear at Saturday morning around 0840 utc but
pileup was too heavy to have a chance. On 15 m i heard a very loud signal from
5T3WW Mauritania but no way to get him in my log. So many stations i was not
able to contact ... on 40 m 8Q7ZO Maldives, C6AGU Bahamas, on 20 m KX7M from 03
zone i tried a couple of times, also PT4A not in log.
10 m was open to South America which i have not seen for years - sometimes it
happened that a QSO was really possible: LU2DOD and LU2DX from Argentina in Zone
13 wkd. Sometimes it was not possible like PX2A at 1420 utc or PP1CZ at 1430
utc. Also no luck on 15 m with ZF1A Cayman Islands, PX2A Brazil or CN8KD
Morocco.
But even that i could HEAR those stations is fantastic! What did we try the last
couple of months to get not boried because no sunspots where in sight - i even
tried FT8 ... lol !
Anyway the sun spots came back ... and it seems that was just the start of an
extremly nice solar cycle - i´m very glad that i can take part of this solar
cycle 25!
In every contest it comes more clearly that it is so important to LISTEN !!!
There are always some guys calling and calling and calling ... and calling - but
they don´t listen to the radio 😭.
Sometimes it helps to move some Hertz up or down to find their right receiving
frequency - especially if somebody is using narrow CW filters. Well but most of
the operators are willing to LISTEN and so they also can HEAR me!
Seems that Saturday was slightly better than Sunday but anyway i could get some
nice multipliers on both days in my log.
It was a real pleasure to do CW in the contest and to see how many fantastic
operators have been operating on the air - what an amazing hobby!
I didn´t realize i did several breaks for 1 or 1,5 hours so i was fallen in a
sleep just at my station 😲! Thanks god i was active in morse code and not
phone with a VOX so you couldn´t hear me snoring hihi ...
Didn´t meet my score of 2019 but i´m ok with that. Next year i have to think
about how to do real 48 hours (or even almost). Sleep is very important - even
it´s just a power nap for 30 minutes or so.
