                    ARRL 160-Meter Contest - 2020

Call: WA2VYA
Operator(s): WA2VYA
Station: WA2VYA

Class: Single Op HP
QTH: STX
Operating Time (hrs): 28.1

Summary:
Total: QSOs = 559 Sections = 78 Countries = 6 Total Score = 96,432

Club: Central Texas DX and Contest Club

Comments:

Thanks for all of the QSOs.

Station: ICOM IC-706MkIIG, Ameritron AL-80B amplifier 500 watts output.

Antenna: 160m Inverted Vee up 17 feet (5m). 470' Beverage pointed Northeast was
available, but only helped with one QSO.

All 84 of the multipliers I worked were among the contacts on the first night.

Missed NNY, PR and AK of the USA multipliers; Seven others, CT, RI, NLI, EB, SF,
SJV and WWA were only worked once each.

Propagation was not favorable to W1, W2 and Washington State. California
appears to be still struggling during a very bad year, because activity seemed
to be down in addition to less than great propagation from here.

Missed MAR, NL, MB in Canada. Heard VE4GV a number of times, but could not work
him. Five of the Canadian sections were only worked once, a testament to those
who activated those places and made them available. Thank you.

Working VY1CO NT was the highlight, my first Yukon Territory Contact on 160m.
KH6ZM was alone and in the clear calling CQ when I worked him.

DX: 10 QSOs, 6 Countries: C6, CO, CT9, V3, XE(4), ZF(2). Did not hear Europe or
Asia, mainland Africa, or South America. CT9ABO had a solid signal and was
easily worked (thank you).

The contest was a struggle with my low antenna. Many, many repeats and a few
lost contacts when I faded out on the other end. Was able to run at times, when
my the band was not so busy that I sunk below the noise and other signals.

K5NA put out a rallying call before the contest to our Central Texas and Contest
Club and the result was a good turnout.

Always pleased to work familiar friends and I especially look for the Frankford
Radio Club guys from the homeland in contests. Most of W1 and W2 seem to be
between hops from here on most bands, so I make an effort to work those areas
during contests when the short openings occur.

Beyond Texas, the propagation favored W0, W9 and W8, with the most QSOs with
Illinois (32), Minnesota (31), California and Pennsylvania(23)[great
participation, but not great propagation to PA], Ohio and Wisconsin (22),
Indiana (20). Colorado, Arizona and W5 (outside Texas) were loud, but less
numerous.

73, Frank WA2VYA
