Comments: So if you ever wondered whether DX Contests are only for KW
stations with serious towers and yagis, my snapshot of contesting via
QSOs made during the 2020 ARRL WWDX-CW contest shows the answer to be:……..
Not exactly.

A little over half of my QSOs were made with stations running 500w+. That
leaves 43.3% of the participants running lower power, mostly around 100w.
Special kudos go to the 1% running QRP ( 5w)! Theyre out there doing battle in
their low profile way.

If you are a competitive, results-oriented ham, the class with the highest
competition is definitely HP/High Power. But W3HKK operates in that class
WITHOUT any yagis or towers, by using all-wire antennas that are inexpensive and
simple to build and erect. Only one tree is used to support a 52 ft mast for
the 160-80m Inv-L antennas. The other antennas are simple ¼ wave ground
planes around 8 ft above ground with typically 4 elevated radials that also
serve as guy wires. Cheap fiberglas fishing poles with #14 wire taped to
them. Coax fed. No matching networks required. Providing low swr across all or
most of the bands they are designed for.

Two element phased vertical arrays are used on 40 and 20m to get around 3 db
gain in a fat forward lobe. They are switchable to give almost 360 degree
coverage. A simple ground plane is used for 10m.

So, as you can see, there is plenty of room for 100 watters in contesting. In
fact, they are essential for a successful contest, providing QSOs and
multipiers for the multitudes. Plus the lower power categories have fewer
entrants, so pulling out a higher ranking is easier than in the HP category.

Also notice there is still room for non-conformists. 99-64-50 watt powers were
exchanged. And 1000 watts was expressed as: 1000, k, kw. 100 watts was
expressed as 100, or ATT. Who says hams lack a sense of humor. You just have
to look for it.

NOTE: 2020 PROPAGATION:
160: Good on Fri night. Excellent Sat night with long runs and low to quiet
QRN. (For once I felt a little bit like K1LT feels on a regular basis!)

80 was very good but gets ignored more than it deserves.

40 was very good, but I missed most of the nice Asia opening Sun morning
( overslept :<) .

20 was gangbusters into EU both mornings from SR to around noon. I chose to
take short naps from 1-3pm. 20 was so good that I worked ten QRpers. The polar
regions were very quiet so it was a coming out party for SM-OH-DL-Northern
Russia- and some arctic islands. No deep openings to speak of but Sat night
was busy with JA's and some exotic Asians. My timing was off so I missed most
of it, however. Nice to hear VK-ZL-and a couple of Pacific islands coming in
well. Sunday night was disappointing at our SS.

15 showed many spots but I only heard a small number. But it was a good
source of easy mults.

10 only popped open for short periods with sigs coming and going. Only a
handful were heard well enough to call. Again, some new mults for the
deserving.

QSOs by band shows - Top to Bottom: 20-40-160-80-15-10
