COMMENTS:

Besides getting ready for and operating a contest his week, efforts continued on
investigation of line noise sources in close proximity to the station. Found a
new one and could actually hear the arc buzz at an insulator using an ultrasonic
receiver "imported" on this trip (thanks W2LE for the donation).
Unfortunately there are at least three more noisy power poles within 500 feet
that are suspected sources but unfortunately some are time of day sensitive
which makes for sure identification elusive. Oh ... and if you wondered, no,
the power company has not come to fix the reported problem. You have to play the
long game on this issue here.

Spent a day trying to diagnose problems with my 25 year old C31XR without much
conclusive headway. The ultimate solution appears to be dropping the worn
driven elements to refurbish them. I suspect connectivity between some of the
tapered tubes has become intermittent or failed entirely. Salt and wind are
brutal here and take their toll. Project for another trip.

Repaired two broken beverages - again the wind and salt at work.

Repaired the 160M vertical dipole. Failed balun connection found, again the
salt and wind causing havoc. Do you see a pattern?

Enjoyed visiting with first time island visitor and fellow FRC member K3SW and
his XYL. Also socialized with long time friends K2LE, W6LD, AE6Y and W0YK. The
CA contingent completed the P40L/P49Y rebuild this week. The station looks and
sounds and terrific.

Great to hear such great competition from everywhere in the Caribbean. Congrats
to those of you who made the effort to operate off shore.

Everyone else on 3830 has already written how great 160/80/40 were during the
contest, how 15M opened really late on Saturday, and how ten didn't do much
until Sunday for a few short hours. All these things are true and are worthy of
being repeated.

The lower bands were as good as you hope them to be at the very bottom of the
cycle. And we were blessed with a QRN free weekend in this part of the Carib so
dealing with the fast QSB that seemed ever present was made so much easier.

First time entering SOAB High Power since 2007. The fun factor was really
enjoyed by being just a little louder this time (after so many LP and QRP
entries the last decade). Had my share of 200+ hours (using just one radio) -
this was rate junkie paradise.

Its official - Ten Meters remains mortally wounded and will require en even
longer period of rehabilitation before returning to active duty. The brief few
hours of weak propagation were better than last year but nothing more than a
teaser.

The ARRL has finally gotten their act together and by next contest season we
should see ARRL contest rules updated to allow apportionment of multi-op points
among multiple clubs like CQ contests have done for years. This rule change was
very long overdue. We should also see Low Power redefined from 150 to 100 watts
input. The ARRL CAC overwhelmingly voted recently to drop the limit from 150w
to 100w (this rule has been in place since the typical transmitter had a pair of
6146 finals). PROGRESS!

I want to thank those of you who were willing to move to another band with me
for a new multiplier - it was greatly appreciated!

Special thanks to W2NO, W2LE, KU2C, N6BT and P43A for providing materials and
expertise for this trip. Also a note of appreciation to my Aruban hosts who for
24+ years have helped facilitate my nearly life-long contesting addiction, and
to my XYL Elaine, KB2ERI, for her never ending support.

See you next month in RDXC and WPX PH from this One Happy Island.

73,
John, W2GD
