Comments:
Originally I was supposed to be heading down to TI this weekend for our yearly
get together with KL9A and his wife. Unfortunately we had to cancel the trip a
few weeks ago due to COVID-19. All of a sudden both Chris and I were available
to operate the contest on short notice. I hit up N6WIN and Chris hit up N9RV,
and we both had seats at big stations for another epic West Coast Show Down like
in the old days. We also had some major competition from Axel NO6T and Mitch
K7RL. There is nothing better than to have other "local" guys active.
It really brings out the best in all the operators as there was always a sense
of somebody will be beating you if you let up. We also all agreed to post to
Live Scores, with a gentlemen's agreement to not peak nor have any host tell us
about the others. We hoped that some ham's may have had fun watching the Western
Show Down.
Tim, N6WIN had already dismantled the entire station for the summer since nobody
was going to be doing this contest. This meant that we had to set up the entire
shack from scratch. I took Friday off from work just to work on the station.
We needed every minute of it, but we successfully had everything working by 9pm
Friday night. All that was left was to wake up at 4am, and start the final
preparations. A much deserved vendor shout out to Jeff, at Green Heron... with
such short notice and the house build going in full swing, Tim was short on
time. Jeff really came through in sending us a RT21 and GHE Remote, setup to our
needs, for plug and play installation in an extremely timely manner.
We had a few minor issues, but for the most part everything worked as expected.
Our biggest concern during the weekend was the extremely high temps over the
weekend. It got up to 110f on Saturday. Tim has all of his HP BPF's and RT21's
in the shed next to the tower. I went out to check them during the contest and
they were all too hot to even touch. Amazingly none of them failed in these
extreme conditions but Tim already has an air conditioner on order for the shed
for the future.
IARU is an interesting contest. From out west, its almost like 2 different
contests happening at the same time. The majority of the serious competitors
will be found on CW while all the casual / non contesters are on SSB. I spent a
great deal of time on 20 and a little bit on 40 SSB trying to work the non
contesters and it really paid off this weekend.
I ended up with 3999 Q's overall. I tried really hard that last hour to get to
4k but fell just short.
